Hyaluronic Acid and Finger Nail/Toe Nail Health

When we think about preserving and increasing the health of our fingernails and toenails, we tend to think about external treatments. And that’s not surprising, since most of the products that protect nails do so by working from the outside inward—relying on chemical polymers to strengthen and reinforce the collagen fibers of the nail.

But there’s another approach—one that uses your body’s natural regenerative mechanisms to improve nail health from the inside outward. To understand how this new approach works, we need to look at very special molecule called Hyaluronic Acid.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a long-chain sugar molecule produced naturally by our bodies. Each molecule of this amazing substance has the ability to bind up to 1,000 times its weight in water! Plus, because HA moves freely through the intracellular space (the space between the cells of our bodies), it can transport this life-giving moisture to the places in the body where it’s most needed—including our skin, hair, and nails.

HA does far more than shield the nail from external damage—it actually supports the nail structure and hydrates and softens the cuticle.

HA and Nail Health

Amino acids form the building blocks both for thick, healthy hair and strong finger and toenails. As early as the 1970s, scientists identified Woman Hands and nailssignificant quantities of lysine, tyrosine, glutamic acid, and a dozen other amino acids in human fingernail samples (Greaves & Moll, Clinical Chemistry, 1976). But not everyone produces these vital amino acids in the same quantities. And as we age, our bodies’ natural ability to produce these essential building blocks begins to decrease.

Symptoms of amino acid deficiency include weak, brittle, or striated (ridged) nails. And these symptoms can increase as we age. You see, our bodies’ ability to produce HA decreases over time, so a person in their 50s might only produce half the HA that they did in their 20s.

Fortunately, Hyaluronic Acid may help. When HA binds with water, it creates a clear gel-like substance rich in moisture. In the cuticle, HA helps support and  to moisturize the tissue and supporting healthier nail growth.

Here are just a few benefits of HA for nails:

    • HA combines with elastin fibers to form a matrix with collagen—supporting the strengthening and reinforcing nail structure, elasticity, and brittleness.
    • HA also helps to hydrate and support the skin that surrounds cuticle, working to maintain its barrier function and protecting against dryness and cracking.
    • Because HA is produced naturally by the body, it supports the body’s natural processes for supporting nail health and hydration.

At Hyalogic®, we’ve spent the past two decades studying the HA molecule and using its amazing properties to create top quality health and beauty products.
